The Bremen 12 and under All-Star team had its year ending celebration at the home of Amy, and Todd Hundt, as always they were great hosts. Amy, and Todd have been benefactors of the Bremen All-Star team for many years, and they are greatly appreciated for this. The All-Star parents deserve a big (Thank you) for all they did for this team, getting the players to all the practices, and games. Hauling the team to away games (Thanks Mary and the bus). Having ice, and water, and Gatorade, and sunflower seeds for the team. Supporting the team from the bleachers, we always had large crowds, at home, and away games. Thanks Parents.

I’d like to thank the President of the Bremen Little League Kara Kovach, very, very, very, supportive of the team. Always there when we needed her, did all the little things that no one sees, but without those things being done, we could not have played. Thank You.

Our official score keeper Luuuuuuuu Jensen, she makes it easy for the coaches, and the stats are always right on. When you are around a person long enough, you start taking them for granted, you just know it will be done right, so you stop thinking about it, and with Luuuu that’s how I am, but without her, it gets done, but not easily, and for that reason Luuuuuuu I am eternally grateful.

Head All-Star grounds keeper Curtis Thornton, one phone call, and he’s ready to go. Again I take him for granted, and it gets done, I don’t worry. If he’s not available to do it; it gets done, but not easily. He sets the field up before the game, runs the scoreboard, and tears the field down after the game. He also helps coach when we are short handed. Sometimes he forgets to put something away, and gets into a little trouble, but that’s Curtis, Great Young Man, Thank you.

Our website designer, and maintainer, Bill Paolucci. Isn’t our website one of the better ones around, that’s Bill’s doing. I just send him info, and he creates a wonderful site. It has gotten to the point if I forget to send him info he reminds me, which is a great help, again I take it for granted, and it gets done. He also lined up one of our sponsors RBC to help out. When we were short handed, he offered, and ran the scoreboard. Bill without you, our communication would be less, and our season would be harder.

Our head umpire Mick Gardner, again one phone call, and he was there. Mick did a great job, was fair, responsible, and called good games. When I was short handed one more phone call and he helped coach the team at LaVille, how many umpires would do that. Thank you.

The Coaching Staff

Chuck Nick
We have been coaching together for 8 seasons, and we take each other for granted, he knows what I’m doing, and I know what he’s doing, and we usually don’t get in each other’s way. We have had many good times, a few bad times, but always enjoyed coaching the team. Chuck does something’s other coaches would not do, he offers to help call the players with updates, and scheduling changes. He helps set up the winter workouts. He’s right there on the tryouts; he gives his opinions, and listens to others opinions. He likes coaching third, which I do not, so we make pretty good pair. Thanks Chuck.

Kevin LaFree
He’s been with the program for 6 years, and I have known him his whole life. Kevin’s good, he has first hand knowledge of the game, and he shares it, in one on one practices. Kevin is not overly vocal, but he makes sure he gets his opinions across. If I have a question about baseball, I ask him, he tells me, it’s usually the right answer, and we move on. Thanks Kevin

Thad Kovach
In his second full season, he has been a big help with the offence, and the whole program, in his 2 years Bremen has scored over 500 runs, that’s a big help. He also has first hand knowledge of the game, and he teaches it well, if an All-Star listens, and does what he teaches, he will be a better All-Star. He wants to make any young man a better player, and enjoys doing that, and seeing that young man become better. Thanks Thad

Accomplishments

  • The 2010 All-Stars had a long list of firsts for my tenure with the All-Star program.
  • Undefeated in the Tri-county league, and tournament.
  • Most wins. Fewest losses.
  • Most runs scored for a season.
  • Most hits for a season.
  • Most doubles for a season.
  • Most triples for a season.
  • Most home runs for a season.
  • Highest team batting average.
  • Fewest runs given up for a season.
  • Fewest strike outs for a season.
All the above shows me that this was a great team. The last one on the list (fewest strike outs) shows me how great. In doing the game stats, and collecting the data over the years, I have found that a 11 and 12-year-old All-Star will strike out normally around 20% of his plate appearances. That’s the average, it’s a given, about 1 in 5 plate appearances will be a strike out, (not good, not bad) that’s what the data shows. This team ALLLLL 12 All-Stars were below 20%. That means they put the ball in play, or drew a walk, they did something to help score many, many, runs. Amazing.

The 2010 Team

#8 Peyton Stouder 100% all the time, no 99% effort from Peyton. First in line, first in Heart, first with his feet (and he runs like his feet are on fire), loves the game. Stick him anywhere, and the team will win.

#2 Jacob Pierce he is the definition of exceeds expectations, had to start him (to good of hitter, too good of player). Made the coaches go wow a lot. His effort made this team.

#3 Matt Box perhaps the quickest reaction time of any All-Star. On the infield gets great jumps on hit balls, just like we teach, hitting it looks like the balls past him, no boom its gone.

#12 Benjamin Nick great clutch hitter, Benjamin’s up to the plate, need a hit, no problem, a hit is what you get.

#9 Grant Klockow if your on base in front of him, and he hits, you better move cause he’s going to catch you. Made a in-the-park home run look easy. Plays great defense infield or outfield, that’s not easy.

#5 Bryce Devine strong bat, strong arm, powerful hitter had the most line shots that dented the outfield fence as anyone on the team. Powerful pitcher, no fear, turn him lose, and watch, as he gets it done.

#7 Clay Sterling infield Captain strong at second base, as one opposing Coach stated, could Bremen play someone else at second, and give our team a chance. Never caught by surprise, on defense or offense, amazingly was always prepared.

#4 Ryan Topper (Stylin Ryan), as Coach K stated early “it is all about style for Ryan” true, but add in swagger, and the other team knew they were in for a defeat. Ryan didn’t come to the ballpark to lose, and with his effort we didn’t. Great catcher, great pitcher, great hitter.

#11 Pedro Lopez FLUID, in his throwing, his defense, his hitting. Once we turned him on, and told him to let it go, he was fun to watch.

#6 Brett Louderback Big Bad Brett there is no quicker bat, there is no I’m walking, or swinging and missing, I’m going to put the bat on the ball, and I’m going to turn that single into a double, that double into a triple, and if it goes over the fence, I’ll jog after third base.

#1 Andrew Cullers PURE put the bat on the ball if it is close to a strike, take the walk if it’s not. Early in the count drive the ball hard, late in the count put the ball in play, just like we taught him, and he excelled at that, and by the way plays great defense too.

#10 Bryce Cassel knows the game, not just the all around game, but each game, the moments in each game, the fractions of moments in each game, knows what has to done, and how to do it. AND THEN DOES IT SUCCESSFULLY.

Season Ending Tri-County Travel League Tourney>

Pitching highlights: Bryce Cassel went 4 strong innings, keeping the Mentone All-Stars off balance, giving up noooo runs, on 1 walk, and 1k. Pedro Lopez finished the game going 2 innings, with 2 runs scored, 4 walks, and 2K’s.

Offensive highlights: With 2 hit games were the 2-3-4-5 hitters, (follow this theme through the tournament). Andrew Cullers had 1 double, 1 single, for 2 runs scored. Big Bad Brett Louderback had 2 doubles for 2 runs scored, and 2 RBI’s. Pedro Lopez had 2 singles for 1 run scored, and 1 RBI. Bryce Devine 2 singles, for 1 run scored and 2 RBI’s. With 1 hit games were Bryce Cassel 1 single, for 3 runs scored. Stylin Ryan Topper 1 long line drive single for 1 run scored, and 1 RBI. Captain Clay Sterling 1 single for 2 RBI’s. Jacob Pierce 1 single. The big blow for the game came from the bat of Benjamin Nick with 2 All-Stars on base, Benjamin sent a shot over the left field fence for his first All-Star home run, a 3 runs dinger, Benjamin ended with 2 runs scored, and 3 RBI’s.

In Bremen’s second game against the North Liberty All-Stars, both teams played very well, in a nail biter, extra inning game. The Bremen All-Stars sucked it up, played tough, and won the game in 8 innings, 5 to 4.

Defensive highlights: Grant Klockow playing right field, got a great jump on a duck snort off a N. Liberty bat, and made the shoe string catch, to keep his team in the game. All three outfielders Andrew Cullers in center, and Jacob Pierce in left, had excellent games, keeping everything in front, and making the throws in, to keep the N. Liberty runners in check. Big Bad Brett Louderback behind the plate catching (due to medical reasons sidelining Stylin Ryan Topper) threw out 2 would be base stealers to Pedro Lopez at third.

Pitching Highlights: The Bryce (the ice) Cassel got the nod to start, and went 4 gutsy innings, allowing 3 runs, on 1 walk, and 4K’s. Middleman the other Bryce (the ice) Devine pitched 3 solid innings, giving up 1 run, and worked out of a bases loaded jam, with help from his shortstop Hott Feet Peyton Stouder gunning down a potential go ahead run at the plate. Bryce ended with 1 walk, and 4K’s. In the 8th Pedro Lopez was lights out pitching, throwing just 10 pitches, striking out the 3 batters he faced, and ending with 3 K’s noooo runs, nooooo walks, and the win.

Offensive highlights: With 2 hit games were Bryce Cassel, 2 singles, and 1 run scored. Bryce Devine 2 singles and 1 run scored. With 1-hit games were: Jacob Pierce, 1 single; Pedro Lopez, 1 single for 1 run scored; Andrew Cullers, 1 single; Brett Louderback, a solo homer into the south parking lot for 1 run scored and 2 RBI’s; Benjamin Nick, 1 single, oh, but what a single. In the 8th with Clay Sterling on base, Grant Klockow was hit by a pitch moving Clay to second, up steps Benjamin, who hit a hard grounder up the middle deep enough for a hustling Clay to beat the throw home for the winner. Benjamin ended with 1 single 1 run scored, and 2 RBI’s. Great game, and with that win Bremen advanced to the championship game.

The championship game Bremen played North Liberty who advanced from the losers' bracket. Bremen was ready, and the game was soon over, it went 5 innings in an 18 to 2 win, giving Bremen an undefeated year in league competition. Defensive highlights: The middle infielders Peyton Stouder at short, and infield Captain Clay Sterling kept North Liberty’s bats from getting many hits. Clay at second had many putouts, and as the N. Liberty coach asked couldn’t we play someone else there to give his team a chance. Peyton fielded a grounder with runners at first and third, and instead of giving up a run for an out, made a hard throw to Brett Louderback at home for a out and no runs.

Pitching highlights: Bryce Cassel started and went 3 innings, again keeping the hitters off balance, ending with 1 run, 2 walks, and 3K’S. Bryce Devine pitched 1 inning, for 1 run scored, and 1 walk. Pedro Lopez pitched 1 inning, for noooo runs scored. Offensive highlights: With 3 hit games, were #2 hitter Andrew Cullers, 1 double, 2 singles, for 4 runs scored. #4 hitter Pedro Lopez, 2 singles, 1 towering 3 run home run over the center field fence, for 3 runs scored, and 6 (yes 6) RBI’s. #5 hitter Bryce Devine 2 singles, and 1 double that hit the center field fence on the fly, right after Pedro’s homer, Bryce ended with 3 runs scored, and 3 RBI’s. With 2 hit games were: #3 hitter Brett Louderback, 2 singles for 4 runs scored and 4 RBI’s; Clay Sterling 1 duck snort and 1 hard single for 1 run scored and 2 RBI’s; Hott Feet II Grant Klockow, 2 singles for 1 RBI. With 1-hit games were: Bryce Cassel, 1 single for 2 runs scored; Jacob Pierce, 1 single for 1 run scored and 2 RBI’s; Peyton Stouder, 1 single; and Benjamin Nick, 1 single.

GREAT TEAM—GREAT YEAR LOTS OF TROPHIES—LET’S PLAY A LITTLE MORE!

I would like to thank the following people who helped with the tournament. Every tournament has its bumps, and this one was extremely bumpy. Thanks to Big Bill Paolucci for doing the tournament bracket, and getting them out, and for running the scoreboard for the last game. Luuuuuuu Jensen for being the official score keeper for the entire tournament, not a better choice anywhere. Crew chief Bob Stats, for all the help wherever needed. Chuck Nick for handing out trophies. Thad Kovach for coaching us to victory. Kevin LaFree for coaching the pitchers and making sure my truck was loaded. Curtis Thornton for setting up the diamond, keeping book, announcing teams, and painting the bases for the last game. Bobby Cornett for filling in on setting up the diamond, and running the scoreboard, former All-Stars are always there when you need them. Justin Nick for setting up the diamond. David Pierce, Jacob, and Copper for helping prepare the diamond after the rain. Brad Sterling for chalking the lines for the last game. They were the straightest of the tournament, and he did not use a guide string. Big thank you to board members Joe Mullin, always around helping out, and Brian Town for announcing the awards.

And as usual, President Kara Kovach for everything else.

Let’s start with BIG THANK YOUS to the following individuals: Brian Town, your 10 and under All-Star coach, he has developed a good program, and a good program isn't easy, he has been diligent, fair, and got the younger players some much needed experience The future is sooooo bright we will have to wear shades. (disabled list), but he asked the doctor for pain relief so he could get back to the game. Scoring runs after earning walks were Zach Burkholder and Benjamin Nick.

Defensive highlights: Playing with a sore elbow catcher Ryan Topper threw out a potential base stealer, with a hard line drive throw to Zach, who easily tagged the runner out. Again Captain Clay made a nice cover play, covering first after first baseman Jacob Pierce snagged a dribbler down the first base line, quickly threw to the Captain who was covering.

Two more big Thank Yous this time to the third and first base coaches, Chuck Nick and Thad Kovach, who continue to be aggressive with our hitters and base runners, and broke us into a 10-run inning that got the All-Stars back into double-digit scoring.

Bryce Devine pitched the final 2 innings just as strong giving up noooooo runs, 2 HBP, and 4K’s.

Offensive highlights: With another 3 hit game was Andrew Cullers (his second of the day), 3 singles, 1 run scored, and 3 RBI’s. With 2 hit games were Grant (in the park, and off to the races) Klockow who picked up his first All-Star home run on a liner to the right field corner, and with his Hott Feet II, easily scored before the fielders could throw the ball in, driving in 2 runners, Grant finished with a home run, 1 single, for 2 runs scored, and 3 RBI’s. Brett Louderback, 1 scorching triple, 1 single, for 2 runs scored, and 4 RBI’s. Pedro Lopez 2 singles, for 2 runs scored, and 1 RBI. Bryce Devine, 2 singles, for 1 run scored. Peyton Stouder 2 singles, for 1 run scored, and 2 RBI’s. With 1 hit games were Matt Box 1 single, for 1 run scored, and 1 RBI. Benjamin Nick 1 single, for 2 runs scored, and 1 RBI.

On July 11th Bremen returned to action against Pioneer and, in a pitcher's duel and defensive tug of war, lost 4 to 3. Pitching highlights: Bryce Cassel threw all 5 innings (well enough to take the win), allowing only 4 cheap runs, throwing 88 pitches, with noooo walks and 6K’s.

Defensive highlights, Ryan Topper was back in the lineup, after his football tryout in the BIG D, he was part of two highlights, the first on a passed ball with a runner attempting to steal home Ryan gathered the ball and dove, to tag out the runner. The other with a runner on third, a sharp hit grounder to third baseman Matt Box was fielded quickly, and thrown to first baseman Bryce Devine for 1 out, and sharply thrown to Ryan at the plate to tag the other runner out, completing the double play. The third defensive gem was from Captain Clay Sterling on a grounder hit to the right of first baseman Bryce Devine, who momentarily juggled the ball, then threw to a waiting coverage man Clay to get the out at first.

Offensive highlights: With 1 hit games were back-to-back doubles from Bryce Cassel, and Andrew Cullers plating all 3 Bremen runs. Bryce finished with 1 double, 1 run scored, and 1 RBI. Andrew finished with 1 double, and 2 RBI’s. The other Bremen hit came form Matt Box who hit a rocket single that almost took the arm off the pitcher. Scoring the other runs after earning walks were Clay Sterling, and Styin Ryan Topper.

Bremen will not advance to the next level of the Town & Country tournament; we played hard, against equal competition, and came close to advancing. Three of the big highlights for Bremen in the tournament were the home run by Grant Klockow, (you don’t see too many true in the park home runs) which was great. Bryce Cassel hanging tough, and throwing a complete game. The #1 highlight was (heeeeeeeeee’s back) with 7 hits, and 9 RBI’s in 3 games, #1 Andrew Cullers.

I now know that there is an advancing tournament that Bremen can, and will compete in, hopefully advancing the next time. With the okay rom the Bremen Little League Board we will be back again, again, again, again, again, you can bet on that.

Bremen’s last regularly scheduled home game was Saturday June 19 against Rochester. Bremen came ready to play, knocking out 16 hits in a 15 to 0, 5 inning win. Pitching was great; defense was great, and offence amazing. Defensive highlights: of the game came on a long foul ball off the bat of an Rochester hitter. First baseman Andrew Cullers went deep down the right field line to the foul fence and caught the ball over his shoulder for the out. Almost as great was another popup caught off the first batters bat. Bryce Cassel came off the mound dove to his right and caught the ball at ground level. The third defensive play of the game was when a Rochester hitter bounced a grounder off first baseman Andrew’s glove toward Captain Clay Sterling’s direction who gathered the ball, made the throw to first for the out.

Pitching highlights: Starter Bryce Cassel went the first inning, and allowed noooo runs, nooo walks, picking up his ninth league win. Middle man Pedro Lopez went 3 strong innings allowing noooo runs, 2 walks, and 6K’s giving him 41K’s in 26 innings pitched. The nights closer was Bryce Devine pitching the 5th, for noooooo runs, and using the K to get all his outs (3). For our pitching staff that they now have back-to-back shutouts, using 5 different pitchers.

Offensive highlights: With a 3 hit game was the Deuce man or maybe (trey man), Jacob Pierce 3 singles, for 3 runs scored, and 5 (yes 5) RBI’s. Bremen’s makeup game on Sunday, June 13, with the Rochester All-Stars. What a game, two heavy weight programs punching it out for 10 rounds (innings) with:

THE BREMEN HEAVYWEIGHT'S COMING OUT ON TOP 5 TO 4!

The defense, and pitching, were the highlights, with timely hitting, good base running, and unselfish play added in, to make a great game. As Coach Nick stated all the Bremen All-Stars will remember this game for a long long time.

Defensive hightlights: Shortstop, and second base play by Peyton Stouder, and Clay Sterling was amazing. Second baseman Captain Clay fielded everything hit his way, keeping his body in front of the bad bounces, and taking them off his chest, and throwing out the runners. Shortstop Peyton, in the early innings fielding a grounder with a runner on second zipping a throw to first baseman Bryce Cassel, for one out, and Bryce zipping a throw to third baseman Matt Box for a tag out double play. In the late innings Peyton fielded a sure base hit to his right, and zipped another throw to first keeping his team in the game. Left fielder Andrew Cullers chasing down a high fly down the line, (surely a double), for an out in the late innings. Catcher Ryan Topper, after pitching the first 3 innings, caught the last 6, and allowed nothing by him.

Pitching highlights: Starter Stylin Ryan went 3 the good innings, for 4 runs, 3 walks, and 1K. Pedro Lopez pitched the next 3 innings excellently allowing noooooo runs, nooooo walks, and 3K’s. Bryce Devine pitched the next 3 (in his first extended performance) allowing nooooooo runs, noooooo walks, and 3K’s. Closer Peyton Stouder pitched the last inning with noooooo runs, nooooo walks, and 1K, to get the win, his first of the 2010 campaign.

Offensive hightlights: Bremen used their 9 hits, and 1 big sacrifice fly to score their 5 runs. With 2 hit games were Bryce Cassel, 2 singles. Andrew Cullers, 2 singles. Brett Louderback 1 single, 1 double (in the 10th), for 2 runs scored, and 1 RBI. Bryce Devine 1 single, and getting the Bremen scoring started a solo home run over the right field fence in the second inning, his second homer of the year, for 1 run scored, and 1 RBI. With 1 hit games was Ryan Topper, and scoring 1 run. Others with runs scored or RBI’s were Peyton Stouder 1 scored, and 1 RBI. Jacob Pierce 1 run scored, and the big RBI from Grant Klockow. In the 10th, Brett led off with a double off the right field fence, after stealing third, Rochester intentionally walked Pedro Lopez, bringing up to the plate Grant (Hott Bat) Klockow, on the first pitch he sent a towering fly ball to left field, backing up the fielder to make the catch, and with Brett tagging at third easily scored the winning run. Great Play! Great Game!

Bremen traveled to Rochester on Wednesday June 9 for a match up of undefeated Tri-County League teams. After seven innings there was only one team undefeated — Your Bremen All-Stars!

Deep-deep-deep-deep we are, proven again Wednesday night, as everyone contributed in the 10 to 5 win. Scoring 4 runs in the first Bremen never looked back, never gave up the lead, never stopped scoring, never stopped hitting, never stopped running the bases (like our feet were on fire), never stopped playing outstanding defense, never stopped pitching strikes, all against a quality opponent. Great win.

Pitching highlights: Bryce Cassel started and went 2 innings, with nooooo runs, 1 walk, and 2K’s. Pedro Lopez went the next 2 innings, for only 2 runs, 3 walks, 1 HBP, and 1K. Then Stylin Ryan Topper went the last 3 innings, in control, for 3 runs, 2 walks, and 1k.

Offensive highlights: Even though we had only 1 extra base hit, we still collected 16 total hits, leading the way with 2 hit games were Big Bad Brett Louderback 1 double, 1 single, for 1 run scored, and 2 RBI’s. Bryce Devine 2 singles, for 2 runs scored, and 2 RBI’s. Jacob Pierce 2 singles, for 1 run scored, and 1 RBI. Matt Box who went 2 for 2, (his first 2 hit All-Star game), for 1 RBI. With 1 hit games were the 2 Hott Feet’s, Peyton Stouder 1 single, and 1 run scored. Grant Klockow 1 hard hit liner single, down the right field line, for 1 run scored, and 1 RBI. Ryan Topper, 1 single. Andrew Cullers 1 single, for 1 run scored, and 1 RBI. Clay Sterling 1 single, for 1 run scored, and 1 RBI. Bryce Cassel 1 single for 1 run scored.

Defensive highlights(there were many): Pedro on the mound catching a low pop up near the home plate for an out, and fielding a bunt try, and throwing out the runner at first. Jacob Pierce going back and catching a long fly in left. Bryce Devine at short, 2 nice plays in the last inning, to stop any thoughts of a rally. Captain Clay Sterling keeping the infield focused, and being ready at second for the other infielders to throw to. Matt Box at third, who in one inning had all the outs, fielding 1 hard hit grounder for an out to first, and moving to a line drive before it came off the bat, to stab it for another out, and throwing to Andrew Cullers at first to double up a Rochester runner, for the third out.

The game was back at our house on Wednesday against LaVille. We had 10 hits, and utilized 12 walks for a 16 to 1 win. What was impressive, after taking a week off, was our focus on defense, everyone was ready, and knew each situation.

Defensive highlights: Right fielder Bryce Devine, went into the right center gap to track down a long fly for an out, Left fielder Jacob Pierce did the same in left center on a long fly ball. Second baseman Captain Clay Sterling had a nice play on a grounder with a runner on first; he got the lead out, and almost turned the double.

Pitching: Starter Bryce Cassel went 3 innings throwing 65% strikes for 1 run, 1 walk, and 6K’s. Pedro Lopez pitched 1 inning, of scoreless ball, nooooo runs, 1 walk, and 2K’s. Stylin Ryan Topper finished the game pitching 1 inning, for noooo runs, 1 walk, and 2K’s.

Offensive: With 2 hit games were Hott Feet Peyton Stouder, 2 long singles, for 3 runs scored, and 1 RBI, again he ran like his feet were on fire. The deuces were wild for Jacob Pierce (whose uniform number is 2); he had 2 singles, 2 runs scored, and 2 RBI’s. Pedro Lopez had 1 single, 1 double, throw in 2 walks, and Pedro ended with 4 (yes 4) runs scored, and 4 (yes 4) RBI’s. With 1 hit games were Ryan Topper, 1 long gap line drive double, for 1 run scored, 2 RBI’s. Big Bad Brett Louderback 1 single, for 1 scored, 1 RBI, and almost took the shortstops head off with a liner. Bryce Devine 1 single, but that 1 single did a lot of damage, for 2 runs scored, and 3 RBI’s. Matt Box a nice single up the middle, for 1 run scored. Utilizing the base on balls, and hard outs with runners in scoring position, the following All-Stars scored, or drove in runs. Bryce Cassel 1 run scored, and 1 RBI. Andrew Cullers 1 RBI. Clay Sterling 1 run scored, and 1 RBI. Good game!

Bremen traveled to Mentone for a Wednesday night game, and came away with a hard fought 10 to 4 victory.

As I have stated, each time we play a team they will be better, we have to be better too. Mentone hit the ball, and we had to play defense the entire game, which we did, and that was good for us to know we can handle any situation well. The rest of the season the games should be tighter, and we will need all three aspects of baseball. -i.e.- offense – pitching – and defense. To be one game from the halfway point of the Tri-County league season, and be 7 and 0 is a great accomplishment, pat yourselves on the back, and get ready for the second half.

Defense: The team covered each other well, did not let any big rallies happen, and controlled the game.

Pitching: (Both superb) Bryce C. started, and went 3 strong innings, allowing just 2 runs, nooooo walks, and 5K’s, while throwing 68% strikes. Pedro went the distance, finishing the game, allowing again just 2 runs, with 4 walks, and 4K’s, and threw 60% strikes, in his first full 4 inning All-Star outing.

Offensively: We knocked out 14 hits, and used our feet, delayed steals, sacs, and clutch hitting to maximize our scoring output. Leading the way with a 4 hit game, (quite a feat 4 out of the 14 total) his first as an All-Star, Bryce D. 4 singles, 1 run scored, and 1 RBI. With 2 hit games were Bryce C. 1 double, 1 single, for 3 runs scored, and 2 RBI’s. Benjamin 1 single, and a crushing triple to the left field fence, to score Hott Feet II all the way from first, Benjamin ended with 1 run scored, and 2 RBI’s. With 1 hit games were Hott Feet Peyton, 1 single, and 2 (yes 2) sacrifice bunts to move runners into scoring position for B.B.B. Peyton also collected 1 RBI. Big Bad Brett 1 single, 1 sac fly, for 1 run scored, and 2 RBI’s. Ryan 1 double for 1 RBI. Andrew 1 single. Clay 1 clutch single driving in a run, to finished with 1 run scored, and 1 RBI. Jacob 1 single. Scoring the other runs were Pedro after a HBP, 1 run scored. Grant Hott Feet II scoring from first on the triple, and after a HBP, scored again.

Bremen traveled to Triton to play a make-up game, the weather was hot, and so was Bremen knocking out 21 hits in a 23 to 2 win. Everyone was rested, and ready to go. It didn’t take long; Bremen broke out the heavy artillery in the first scoring 11 runs. It didn’t stop there, as we continued to blast the ball all game long. Bremen had the long ball going with 3 (yes 3) homers. Two of which were in the first, a rocket liner 3 run home run from Pedro, if it did not hit a batting cage fence in center it might still be flying today, and a grand salami (slam) from Bryce C. that being his first All-Star grand slam, and the teams first in 2010, a towering fly over the right field fence. Then in the fifth Bryce D. got into the home run act with his first All-Star homer another towering 3 run shot over the right field fence.

Defensively: The Stylin Ryan in center field made two catches in the fifth to squash any thought of a Triton rally. Another solid performance from Clay at second who is becoming the infield Captain, with his decision-making, and performances. Pitching: Bryce C. started, and went 1 inning for 1 run, 1 walk, and 1K. Pedro came in and pitched 3 solid innings, throwing strikes, and keeping the batters off balance. He had 2 walks, 6K’s, and noooooo runs. Matt making his All-Star pitching debut, went the last inning for 1 run, 3 walks, and 1 HPB, but hung in there to complete the game.

Offensively: With 3 hits games were Big Bad Brett, 2 singles, another double, 3 runs scored, and 1 RBI. Bryce C. his grand slam, 1 double, and 1 single for 3 runs scored, and 6 (yes 6) RBI’s. Jacob 2 singles, 1 double, for 2 runs scored, and 2 RBI’s. Pedro his rocket homer, 1 double, 1 single, for 3 runs scored, and 5 RBI’s. With 2 hit games, were Hott Feet Peyton 2 singles, for 2 runs scored, and 1 RBI. Captain Clay 1 single, 1 double, his first All-Star double, for 2 runs scored, 1 RBI. Bryce D. his towering homer, 1 single, for 3 runs scored, and 6 (yes again 6) RBI’s. With 1 hit games were Ryan 1 single for 2 runs scored. Grant 1 single. Andrew 1 single for 2 runs scored, and 1 RBI, not bad for his first All-Star game back from rehab. Scoring the other run was Matt who earned a walk, and was on base for one of the homers.

Bremen returned to our house to start a weekend series with Triton. The final was 17 to 2, another Bremen victory, and to top it off, another walkoff home run, this time by Jacob a 3 run line shot over the right field fence in the 6th to seal the deal. Intensity was good, focus was good, and the team played as a team, with again everyone contributing.

Pitching: The Stylin' Ryan, got the start and went 3 strong innings, finishing with "nooooooo" runs, 3 walks, and 5 K’s for the win. Peyton threw 1 inning, with a tender arm, allowing 2 runs on 1 walk, and 1 K. Clay finished the game well, throwing strikes, going 2 innings with noooo runs, 1 walk, and 3 K’s.

Offensively: We had 13 hits, and earned 13 walks, leading the way with 2 hit games from the middle of the order were Jacob, Clay, and Bryce D. Jacob had his first All-Star homer, the 3 run walkoff shot, and a hard hit double down the left field line, to finish with 2 runs scored, 3 RBI’s. Clay had 2 solid singles (finishing his swing) for 3 runs scored, and 1 RBI. Bryce D. had 1 single, and his first All-Star triple a nice outfield gapper that he hustled on the base paths all the way to third, to finish with 2 runs scored, and 2 RBI’s. With 1 hit games were "Hott" Feet Peyton a solid double, to finish with 2 runs scored, and 3 RBI’s. The Stylin' Ryan 1 single for 1 run scored, and 2 RBI’s. Big Bad Brett another double for 1 run scored, and 1 RBI. Benjamin 1 single for 2 runs scored. Pedro 1 single for 1 run scored, and 1 RBI. Matt 1 single for 1 run scored, and 1 RBI. ("Hott" Feet II) Grant 1 single, for 1 run scored, and 2 RBI’s. Scoring the other run was Bryce C. who earned a walk, and ran the bases well.

This team would not allow itself any let down, they are "toooo" deep, and are becoming very baseball savy. Rejoining the team (but still rehabbing) is Andrew, who got an at bat in the game.

May 21, 2010
Bremen’s game Wednesday evening was on the road at North Liberty. Our pitching was strong, defense focused, and the bats hot, which equaled to a 24 to 0 win. It was a total team effort, with everyone contributing.

Defense: Outstanding jumps on the hit ball, everyone backing each other up. Jacob at first drop stepping to catch a pop up, Grant at second doing the same.

Pitching: Like Coach Nick said very few times, maybe never before, have we pitched three pitchers and none of them walked a batter. Bryce C., Pedro, and Ryan put a smile on Coach LaFree’s face they all threw 70% and above strikes. Bryce C. threw 2 innings with 4 K’s, and 70% strikes. Pedro threw 2 innings with 3K’s, and 72% strikes. Ryan threw the last inning with 1K, and 75% strikes, great outing for all of them, and the team. On another first, the last 4 batters Bryce C. faced, and the first 3 batters Pedro faced were all strikeouts for 7 K’s in a row (great).

Offensively: I stated our bats were hot, (an understatement) they were sizzling, 23 total hits, and 24 runs. The whole team ran the bases like their feet were on fire, (Peyton must be rubbing off on the rest of the team). Leading the hit parade with his first 5 hit All-Star game Bryce C. 4 singles, 1 triple, for 5 runs (yes 5) runs scored, and 1 RBI. With 4 hit games, another first, Pedro’s first 4 hit All-Star game, 2 singles, 2 doubles, for 4 runs scored, and 7 RBI’s. Also with a 4 hit game, Big Bad Brett, 3 singles, 1 double, 4 runs scored, and 6 RBI’s. Those two were batting in the 3 and 4 spots, combined they had 8 hits, 13 RBI’s, and 8 scored, makes the opposing coaches nervous. Helping to drive in those two was Jacob with his first 3 hit All-Star game, 2 singles, 5 (yes 5) RBI’s, and 1 run scored. With 2 hit games were Hot Feet Peyton, 2 singles 1 RBI, and 2 scored. Benjamin, 2 singles, 2 runs scored, and 1 RBI. With 1 hit games, were Ryan 1 double for 1 RBI, and 2 scored. Clay 1 single, for 1 RBI and 1 scored. Matt 1 single, 1 RBI, and 1 scored. Collecting the other 2 runs scored was Grant, after earning 2 walks he flew around the bases, his feet hardly touching the ground (Hot Feet II?), scoring twice.

How good, can we become, (really good) if we play like we did on Wednesday, and continue to improve. Listen to Koach K. what he has shown you all on hitting is working, and he’s just getting warmed up.

May 16, 2010
Bremen Traveled to LaVille for our first official road league game, and came away with a 14 to 4 win. The All-Star s have played a lot of games going into Saturdays game, and fatigue was somewhat a factor, but the mark of a good team is that they play through fatigue, which we did. At our winter work outs I expressed one of the reasons we go over, and over the basics, it is that if those basics our ingrained in your memories, even though you are a little fatigued, those basic fundamentals are still there, and will help you play at a high level. That showed at LaVille, the entire team helped with the win, which is the way it should be if you have 12 excellent players. That is why we occasionally practice through the season, to re-instill those basic fundamentals.

Highlights: Defensively; Our second basemen (Clay, and Peyton) played great getting many opportunities, and completing all for outs. Pitching; Bryce C. started and went 3 strong innings, giving up just 1 run, nooooo walks, and 5 K’s. Peyton went 2 1/3 for 3 runs, 6 walks, and 4 K’s, and becoming the first Bremen pitcher to hit a batter, (this is going to happen sometimes, with pitching inside, it’s part of the game). Peyton hung tough, but ran out of gas, and with some of our other pitchers having already pitched many innings, we went with Clay, who threw strikes, and let his defense get the outs, (grrrrrreat). Finishing with a 75% strike count, noooo runs, and nooooo walks. Offensively; No homers, but many hits (17 to be exact, great). Leading the way with a 4 hit game was Brett 2 singles, 2 doubles, 3 runs scored, and 2 RBI’s. With 2 hit games were: Bryce D. 1 single (a nice bunt), 1 double, 3 runs scored, and 1 RBI. Hotfeet Peyton 2 singles, one of which cleared the loaded bases of runners, 2 runs scored, and 3 RBI’s. Ryan with 1 single, a hard hit double, for 1 run scored, 2 RBI’s. Clay 2 singles, (1 a nice bunt), for 1 run scored, and 1 RBI. Jacob 1 single, 1 double, for 1 run scored, and 1 RBI. Pedro 1 single, 1 double for 1 run scored (and a run scored for the catcher) and 2 RBI’s. With a 1 hit game was Bryce C. for 2 runs scored, and 1 RBI. The other RBI came Benjamin on a hard hit grounder with a runner on third.

Hopefully all the All-Star s are looking on the bremenallstar.org web site, to follow updates, and stats, I will clarify some of the categories on the stat page. Plate App. (appearances) is how many times an All-Star comes to the plate including sac (sacrifices), HBP (hit by pitch), and BB (walks). At Bats, (is the official at bats for an All-Star ). Total hits, does not include reaching base on an error, or a fielders choice. Total bases, this is how many bases an All-Star crosses during the season. K’s (are strike outs), 2’s (are doubles), 3’s (are triples), HR (are home runs).

Next up practice Monday May 17 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm at the major league diamond. Next game Wednesday May 19 at North Liberty, we will leave at 5:30 pm, in green vests, and green bus, game time 7:00 pm, directions are on the web site.

Bremen’s second game (another home game), and we protected our house well. Scoring 16 runs on 15 hits, for a 16 to 1 6-inning game. Again we started the game hot — we were focused on defense in the first inning, and came in and scored 7 runs in our half. What we did the best throughout the entire game was run the bases extremely well, beating out infield grounders for base hits, taking the extra base on hits to the outfield, tagging up from third, and scoring on fly balls hit to the outfield, we are becoming great base runners, which will help us in tight games. Another area we did well in was scoring in multiple innings, sometimes, enough is not enough, and we kept the offensive pressure on the entire game. We can also score from any slot in the batting order.

Defensively: Most of the action was around the mound, with our 3 pitchers Bryce C., Pedro, and Peyton fielding everything hit to them for outs.

Offensively: In our 16 hit attack, those with 3 hit games were Brett, 2 doubles, and a hard hard hit liner for a 2 run home run, to go along with 1 run scored, and 5 RBI’s. Bryce C. had 3 hits, 2 singles, and a high fly 3 run homer over the right field fence, which was a walk off home run, ending the game, to go along with 4 runs scored, and 3 RBI’s. With a 2 hit game was Ryan, 1 single, and his first triple of 2010, for 2 runs scored, and 1 RBI. With 1 hit games were Benjamin a single for 2 runs scored, and 1 RBI. Hotfeet Peyton 1 single for 1 run scored, and 1 RBI. Clay 1 single for 2 runs scored and 1 RBI. Bryce D. 1 single for 1 run scored, and 1 RBI. Pedro his second triple of the year, for 1 scored. Jacob with a towering fly for his first double to go along with 1 run scored, 1 RBI. Grant 1 single and the team’s first sac fly of the year to go along with 1 run scored, and 2 RBI’s.

Pitching: Bryce C. went 2 innings, with noooo runs, 2 walks, and 5 K’s. Pedro in his first 3 inning outing, for 1 run scored, 3 walks, and 6 K’s. Peyton 1 inning, noooo runs, and 1 walk.

Enjoy this game till Saturday, then get ready for our road trip to Triton, be at the pavilion at 5:15 in green vests, for a 6:30 game time.

May 3, 2010
Bremen’s first Tri-County league game was a good one. Bremen’s bats were hot to start, and stayed that way throughout the game, knocking out 21 hits, for a 20 to 2 win. Like I said at the end of the game we are starting to look like a baseball team, doing all the little things that make us better. Little things — like hustling while running the bases, listening to, and trusting the coaches, focusing on defense, everyone moving with every hit, backing each other up, throwing strikes, keeping our chins down, and getting our legs into each swing of the bat. Continue to do these, with more playing time, and confidence, improvement will come, and more great games will follow.

Defensive highlights: Peyton in center running hard and deep to spear a liner, robbing the hitter of a gap shot. Grant in center stopping a one hopper in the right/center field gap, and throwing to second to keep the runner to double. Second baseman Clay covering first, bare handing a throw for the out. Pedro on the mound, catching a liner for an out. Catcher Brett throwing a shot to Bryce D. at third to nail an attempted stealer.

Pitching highlights: Bryce C. 4 strong innings, getting stronger the more he pitched, 7 K’s, noooo walks, and only 2 runs. Pedro 2 strong innings 3 K’s, 1 walk, and noooo runs.

Offensive highlights: Falling behind 2 to 0 did not have any effect on our hitting attitude, scoring 6 in the first, and keeping it up throughout the game. Leading the way with 3 hit games. Pedro hitting his first All-Star homer, a solo shot over the right field fence, to go along with 1 double, 1 single, 3 runs scored, and 3 RBI’s. Bryce C. 2 gap doubles, 1 single, for 3 runs scored, and 2 RBI’s. Clay 3 singles, for 2 runs scored and 3 RBI’s. The season has started; our two practice games helped us get ready for the Tri-County regular season. We moved All-Star s all around, giving them opportunities to play multiple positions. We pitched 7 different pitchers, and are ready to go in that position. Throughout the season during practice time we will look at other All-Star s in different positions. Sunday we begin Tri-County play, I will start 9, but all will play, that means some will play the entire game, some will come in, and some will go out.

Highlights from the practice games; Brett had 3 home runs, and 12 RBI’s, a great start. Bryce C. scored 6 runs, and Peyton 4 runs. Ryan has 4 RBI’s; Bryce D., and Pedro have 3 RBI’s. Extra base hits to go along with Brett’s 3 homers, he has 2 doubles, Bryce D., Benjamin, and Pedro have 1 double each. Pedro picked up the teams first triple.

Offensively we need to hustle out of the batters box with heads straight forward to the next base, and have our ears opened to the coaches. You don’t have to be fast to be a good base runner — just do what was stated before — and you will be great.

Pitching Peyton, and Bryce C. have 4 innings each, and Peyton is throwing 74% strikes, Bryce C. is throwing 64% strikes. Pedro has 3 innings pitched at 59% strikes. The % of strikes is an indicator of consistency around the plate, and not allowing too many walks, that is what I use to judge a pitcher verses a thrower. To be a good pitcher in the Tri-Ccounty League you have to be near or above 60% strikes.

Defensively we have gotten used to playing different positions, and I saw good things. We need to continue to be focused on each hit, pick the ball up off the bat, and move to it. Remember every hit — there are no spectators — everyone needs to move. I am pleased with our progress, we still need some practice time, but we are ready for the regular season.

We still need more practices — to answer questions, get better, get deeper — but as of right now we are good to go. The practice game season is just that (practice) but at game speed. With the practice games we will all learn more about our team, our strengths (hopefully many), and what we need to improve on. We use these games — as coaches — to determine what areas in baseball we need to practice more on, and we do.

Let’s go play some Bremen All-Star baseball!

Welcome back from spring break, and it is now time for baseball. The first practice is Wednesday April 14, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, don't be late. Coach Nick is going to call all players, and remind them personally. The coaches met, and discussed the upcoming season. It was decided at all practices, players should not only wear the appropriate clothing -i.e.- long pants, long sleeves, sweatshirt, and bring a jacket, plus baseball cap, but until we find catchers, be prepared to put the gear on -i.e.- (cup), and try it.

I did not want to give up a day of practice on the 14th, but I will not be there, Coach LaFree, and a helper will be running the show. The next practice on Friday April 16th 6:00 to 8:00 pm the full coaching staff will be there. Do your best, keep your ears opened, and hustle. In the near future I will have a full league schedule, with dates, and times of all our games, any questions call me.

Two rule changes for 2010, #1. The Wednesday games will start at 7:00 pm instead of 7:30 pm. #2. The age cutoff date has been moved from June 1st to May 1st.

The season is getting near, enjoy your spring break, we will still be able to practice 5 times before we play, which should be plenty of workouts to get ready for the competition in the Tri-County league. I am looking forward to it.

We will do team pictures this year.

Bremen played in the Tri-County league season ending double elimination tournament hosted by Bremen. In Bremen’s first game against Mentone, we blasted out 13 hits, for a shortened 6-inning game, a 12 to 2, win (10 run rule in tournament play).

Thank you to all the players who tried out, it takes heart, and courage to put yourself through that. After a good tryout on March 27th, the 2010 Bremen All-Stars is complete. Congratulations to the following young men. Peyton Stouder, Ryan Topper, Brett Louderback, Bryce Cassel, Benjamin Nick and Andrew Cullers those All-Stars are starting their second season. New All-Stars are Clay Sterling, Bryce Devine, Jacob Pierce, Pedro Lopez, Matt Box, and Grant Klockow.

Great tryout, and though the quantity was small, the quality was huge. The coaching staff and the board members that scored the tryouts all agree that this group should be great. With some hard work at practices, keeping your ears open to the coaches, trying your best at what we teach, showing up, on time, playing as teammates, giving 100%, we should win, and with that the fun times will be many. Through the course of the season, you will learn about baseball, and become better at it, and learn some very valuable life lessons.
